Totem Path

Located just 1 kilometer north of Butterfly Spring, the Totem Path Scenic Area provides an immersive experience into the ancient lives of the early inhabitants of Zengpi Rock in Guilin. This area showcases the living conditions, hunting practices, and burial customs of these early residents through a variety of authentic exhibits.

The Totem Path features displays of stone tools, pottery, natural totem poles, ancient bows and arrows, and enigmatic body language that reflect the primitive lifestyle of Guilin’s earliest settlers. This exhibit offers a fascinating glimpse into their history and culture, opening a window into the distant past.

Around 10,000 years ago, the people of Zengpi Rock had no personal names; men were called “A Bu” and women “A Li.” To greet visitors, they would tap their mouths and make “wa wa” sounds to show friendliness. The Zengpi people lived in harmony with the Li River and surrounding mountains, engaging in fishing, hunting, and gathering using primitive stone, bone, and pottery tools. Dressed in colorful animal skins and wielding sharp spears, they hunted in the forests and enjoyed meals of roasted snake and shellfish. Their lives were marked by the rhythm of lively “Yao drums” and the harmonious folk songs of the Li River and Guilin’s hunting ballads, embodying a simple yet natural existence.

Iconic Peaks of the Ten-Mile Gallery

Dolphin Leaping: A small, exquisite peak stands independently, rising dozens of meters high. After thousands of years of weathering and karst erosion, it has formed a spindle-shaped body that resembles a dolphin leaping out of the water, making it the only “marine animal” among the many iconic peaks in the picturesque Guilin region.

Zhu Bajie’s Sunbathing: On the western side of the Ten-Mile Gallery, at the summit of a high mountain, lies a giant horizontal stone that resembles Zhu Bajie from “Journey to the West” sunbathing on his bare belly, appearing both comical and charming.

Golden Cat Emerging: On the eastern side of the Ten-Mile Gallery, a cliff features a small cave. Inside, a peculiar stone at the lower right resembles a golden cat poised to emerge from its den, with its head and front half clearly visible, bringing it to life with exquisite craftsmanship.

Horse and Elephant Rock: To the east of the Ten-Mile Gallery, a towering mountain looms like a barrier. At its base is a cave with a large stalactite attached to the stone wall. Viewed from the roadside, this stone appears unique, depicting two animals: from the outside, it looks like a white horse lowering its head to enter the cave; from the inside, it resembles an elephant leisurely exiting the rock.

Dragon Horn Mountain: To the east of the Ten-Mile Gallery, in front of Longyanmen Village, two peaks rise from the green forest, pointing skyward and resembling dragon horns, akin to a pair of jade shoots breaking through the earth. Locals refer to this area as a “dragon’s mouth,” a site of feng shui significance.

Qin Emperor’s Expedition: The steep cliffs next to Longyanmen Village display intricate patterns that resemble a warhorse. Nearby is a war chariot, followed by a row of Qin Dynasty soldiers dressed in ancient armor, complete with helmets and armor, reminiscent of the terracotta warriors of Xi’an.

Peacock Welcoming Guests: Southeast of Longyan Mountain, a low peak stands gracefully, resembling the head and neck of a peacock proudly raised. The surrounding peaks rise steeply, displaying vibrant colors, resembling a peacock’s plumage on full display.

Camel Crossing the River: On the eastern side of the Ten-Mile Gallery, near the Gongnong Bridge, the endless fields stretch out, and the Tianjia River flows like a white silk ribbon, winding eastward. By the riverbank stands a mountain resembling a camel, appearing to stroll leisurely towards the water, hence the name “Camel Crossing the River.”

Beauty Grooming: Looking south from Gongnong Bridge, a peak on the side of Moon Mountain has a round dome shape, standing elegantly like an Eastern beauty with long hair, gazing ahead while grooming herself.

Young Lion Emerging from the Forest: On the left side of the mountain behind Li Village, a peak stands upright, resembling a playful young lion jumping out of the dense forest, bounding with energy and creating a sense of invitation.
