What to See and Do

Bajiaozhai is divided into two main sections:

  1. Bajiaozhai Sightseeing Area (八角寨观光区): Perfect for panoramic views and nature exploration.
  2. Gumuchong Adventure Zone (古木冲运动体验区): A hub for light extreme sports activities.

For a day trip, it is highly recommended to start from the Guangxi side, as most of the scenic highlights are concentrated here. The hike to the top takes about four hours and offers incredible photo opportunities.

Suggested Route (Approx. 5 Hours)

Map Of Bajiaozhai

1. Qunluo Guantian (群螺观天): Start at the entrance and pass through Yinpan Luoying (银盘螺影) to enter a bamboo forest nestled among Danxia cliffs. Follow the cliffside boardwalk to reach the Qunluo Guantian Viewing Platform (群螺观天观景台), which offers sweeping views of the surrounding peaks resembling scattered snails.

2. Longji Ladder (龙脊天梯): This steep staircase carved into a dragon-shaped Danxia ridge is a highlight of the trail. The stone steps appear like a “ladder to heaven,” offering a thrilling ascent with spectacular views.

3. Lingyuan Valley (凌渊谷): Stand at the edge of Lingyuan Valley to take in awe-inspiring views of a deep abyss. The dramatic drop and surrounding cliffs make this spot one of the most memorable.

4. Longyang Stone (龙阳石): Capture a photo at Longyang Stone along the Tianren Walkway (天人栈道), a suspended trail that hugs the cliffs and provides an up-close view of the unique rock formations.

5. One Step Across Two Provinces (一脚踏两省): Reach the border between Guangxi and Hunan, where you can straddle two provinces in a single step. Don’t miss the “Whale Breaching the Sea” (鲸鱼闹海) rock formation, an incredible geological wonder that evokes the image of a giant whale in motion.

Optional Activities

After hiking to the top, enjoy an exhilarating descent via the half-mountain slide, which is included in your ticket. Starting at the Half-Mountain Pavilion (半山亭), the slide takes you down to Hutouling (虎头岭), saving time and energy. You’ll be equipped with padded pants and gloves for braking, making the experience both safe and thrilling. The ride lasts just a few minutes but adds a fun twist to your adventure.

Dining Recommendations

Dining options on the mountain are limited, especially during the off-season. While there is a small shop at the summit, most restaurants at the base are more expensive but offer detailed and attentive service. For example, even ordering a single dish comes with warm hospitality – one restaurant owner even gifted us fresh oranges!

To save time and money, consider bringing your own snacks and water for the hike. This ensures you stay energized while exploring the scenic trails.
